Those who think that the right of American politics is all about Jesus should think again. Conservatives have a religion they are much more faithful to despite far more evidence that it's a fraud. That religion is free trade.

Free trade as a concept is fine. Eliminate trade barriers between countries to allow both parties access at the other's market.  But in practice, it doesn't work so well when one party's par capita GNP is massively higher than the other. That's where you get Ross Perot's "giant sucking sound".

Permanent friend trade status with China has flooded the US with cheap Chinese products that have put thousands of Americans out of work. We're working our way up the chain to outsource our R&D and engineering jobs to China and India as well.

"Free" trade with Mexico has seen countless American manufacturing jobs shifted south of the border where pollution controls are nil and wages tiny.

And what has this "free" trade done for Americans? Those left with jobs get slightly cheaper goods. But American companies don't get new markets.  China buys very little from America.  Mexico even less.

And now Bush wants to expand this wonderful policy to Central America, a land with the gross national product of a modest-sized American city.  What are these people going to buy? What are we going to export to Nicaragua other than high paying manufacturing jobs?

Bush defenders try to point out that cheaper goods helps us all. That's only true if people have jobs that can pay for adequate housing. The Bush administration's trade policies will slowly create a generation of Americans that work at two levels - the high paid managers of foreign workers and everyone else who will work in the retail retail service industry at very low wages.

With any luck, CAFTA won't pass any time soon. But given the right's blind faith in universal free trade, I won't hold my breath. Americans desperately need a President who is President of all people, not just people who hang out at the countryclub.

"Those who think that the right of American politics is all about Jesus should think again"
In all seriousness, are all the right wing politicians moving in Jesus' circle? When I think of right wing, I don't really think of Jesus or religion at all. Lots of politicians like to say they're religious and they join good causes or whatever, but do they really deal with these people when they're outside of their political suits?

Do you "like" making erronius blanket statements? I am what most on JU would consider an "extreme" right winger. And I have NO faith at all in free trade. So now would you like to print a retraction, or an apology?

how do you explain your constant support for a president who, as a candidate, called for free trade from alaska to the tip of cape horn and two weeks short of four years ago, after being elected, insisted, "We must affirm our commitment to complete negotiations on the free trade area of the Americans by January, 2005. Nothing we do in Quebec will be more important or have a greater long-term impact. It will make our hemisphere the largest free trade area in the world, encompassing 34 countries and 800 million people." ?

HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM! Are the right wingers doing something bad again. Are the great and wonderful Americans being lead down the path by this horrific christian president. Or, is this just another left winger who is just want to stir up the pot of political stew.

Sorry just couldn't help myself.

I understand your point. It seems that the born agains and free trade have nothing to do with eachother. In fact, they really don't. But, for some reason, the religious right have bought into our stupid president, because of his phony cries of saving the world from gay marriage, while at the same time, screwing anyone having less than a billion dollars and a corporation.

Fact is, our president doesn't give a rat's ass about religion, or people, or health care, or the environment, or education, or anything that may cost some money and take profits away from his corporate cronies. His policies are all about padding his buddies' pockets. Including free trade.

It's tough to just close the doors to free trade, given that we live in a global economy now. The world is smaller, thanks to the internet, air travel, phones, etc. So, given that we cannot really turn back the clock, the least we can do is set up restrictions wherein corporations would not be allowed to clean the clocks of the working poor, ruin their neighborhoods, pollute the air, suck the economy dry with their political/corporate theft, etc.

And, these people call themselves religious and moral. In fact, their just a bunch of crooks who sold a bill of goods to a gullible constituency under the guise of some morality scam.

Yeah,Calor, I think you're right on target. But be warned........ the bushies here are so blinded by their jingoism, and so totally hateful of anyone who doesn't agree with them. Their blinded by some concept of the "betterment of society" when in fact, maybe they got a few extra nickels to rub together at the expense of education, health care, air quality, etc. Selfishness seems to be the rallying cry here at joeuser.

Just because you support a president does NOT mean you agree with them 100%. Did you agree with EVERYTHING Clinton did?

This where you are as wrong as you can get. I do NOT agree with free trade and I AM what you call a "bushie"! So I'll ask you the same question I did earlier. Would you like to apologize or would you rather print a rectraction?

The agenda of the religious right conservatives have nothing to do with the teachings of Jesus Christ. Yesterday one of the bishops pointed out how clearly the agenda of the United States and in particular George Bush differed from the views held by Pope John Paul II. the bishop indicated that even though Bush and the Pope agreed on abortion and gay marriage that almost every other element of the Bush agenda was something the Pope did not agree with from the war in Iraq to the way in which Bush deals with people in need.

The Bush political operatives have cleverly seized on two hot button issues -- gay marriage and abortion to make it appear as if they are religious. When you take a look at the Bush budget and the cuts in social programs, it is clear the social agenda of Bush and his conservative cohorts is as far away from what Christ taught us anything could possibly be.

only a fool continues to follow policies that do not work. We have watched the federal deficit; trade deficit ; loss of jobs and the policies we are following do not stem this tide. We have a Social Security system that most people recognize as being insufficiently funded so what is the president proposing - diverging additional money from Social Security which will put further in financial difficulty. Policy such as that does not deserve support but rather to be changed. Also when the American people do not support the policies they should to be changed.
